Car Insurance Question  I have a West Virginia driver's license and was pulled over in Maryland for going 55 in a 40 mph zone. Will points be transferred to my WV license if I pay the MD fine?

West Virginia and Maryland are both members of the Drivers License Compact (DLC). The DLC allows for traffic violations you receive in other states to be reported back to the state in which you are licensed.

The West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has decided to assess points for all traffic violation convictions, regardless of what state they are committed in. So traffic violations you receive in other states (like Maryland) will become part of your WV driving record and points will be assessed.

Points in West Virginia are assigned according to the severity of the offense. Points for a given infraction remain on a driver's record for two years after the date of the conviction. The infraction itself remains on the driver's record for seven years.

A speeding citation for going 15 mph over the posted speed limit is a 5 point offense in West Virginia. If you receive 6 to 8 points against your WV license you will receive a warning letter from the WV DMV, so you might see if you are eligible to take an approved defensive driving course for point reduction.
