Driving 15 mph over the speed limit is a 4 point offense in both Virginia and South Carolina. Both states are part of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) which means that Virginia will report back to South Carolina if you are convicted of this moving violation. According to Title 56 of the Motor Vehicle division of the SC Code of Law, convictions for an out of state violation that would be a violation in South Carolina as well can be recorded against the driver. Thus a conviction for the Virginia speeding citation may be placed on your driving record and could be assessed points if you plead guilty. If the conviction makes it onto your SC driving record, then your insurance rates could be affected once your insurance company sees the violation on your MVR. To find out if there is a way in which to contest it so that you will not be convicted of the offense, you will need to contact the VA Department of Motor Vehicles or the court listed on your citation.
