I got a ticket on Pennsylvania Turnpike for 80mph on a 65mph zone in the Somerset County area. I have a Virginia license. Do I get points on my VA license? Does it affect my insurance?

Pennsylvania, where you obtained your speeding ticket, and your home state of Virginia are both members of the Drivers License Compact. This agreement requires member states to report out of state moving violation convictions back to the state where the driver is licensed.

So if you are convicted of speeding, the PA DMV will forward this information onto the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. The VA DMV states that demerit points can be assigned to your driving record for traffic convictions occurring out of state.

Speeding 15 mph over the posted speed limit is a 3 point offense in PA but a 4 point offense in Virginia. You are likely to get the points assessed as if this was a VA ticket on your license.

Once the PA violation is placed on your VA driving record, your insurance company could see the offense and thus cause your rates to rise. Virginia allows insurance companies to assign points on your insurance record but these point values are developed by individual insurance companies so you will have to contact your provider to see if this one ticket will affect your premium.
