I was caught doing 81 in a 55 zone in Virginia and was told this constitutes Reckless Driving under Virginia law. I have a Maryland Provisional License, what should I expect to happen?

Reckless driving is a 6 point moving violation offense in both Virginia and Maryland. Both states are members of the Drivers License Compact meaning that the Virginia DMV will send the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration information on a conviction for this citation.

Once the MD MVA receives this conviction they will record it on your driving record and decide if points will be assigned for the offense. Reckless driving in Virginia can be considered serious so you will need to find out from the VA DMV or court listed on your citation what penalties you will receive from Virginia.

As for your provisional license in Maryland, convictions for moving violations received while holding this license will require the completion of a driver improvement program and/or the suspension/revocation of your driver's license. Convictions also restart the 18 month minimum waiting period to move up to full licensure status.

For more information on what affect this Virginia citation will have on your provisional license, contact the Maryland MVA. And if in need of auto insurance while having your provisional license or once you receive your full license, you can get a car insurance quotation from our site.
