Car Insurance Question  I received a ticket today in the parking lot of my apartment complex for crossing a do not enter sign. Apparently, it was a one way road, but there are not signs. I live in Maryland. Would the points from this ticket transfer to my Arizona license? I need to get a new Maryland license since I am moving here. Will points show up on a new Maryland license?

It would appear that your ticket for crossing a do not enter sign would fall into the "any moving violation not listed" as a point value assigned offense and "not contributing to an accident section" of the Maryland points assessment list. If this is true, then it would be a 1 point violation in Maryland.

In Arizona it seems that same offense would likely fall under the "all other moving violations" area of the points assessed offense and be worth 2 points. Since both states are members of the Drivers License Compact (DLC), Maryland should report this violation back to your Arizona since you are licensed there once you are convicted of the violation.

Title 28, the Transportation section of Arizona statutes, gives details on the DLC and Arizona's participation. It does not note however if points for out of state offenses will be assigned points or if the offense will be recorded onto your driving record. Check with the AZ Department of Transportation to find out what will be done with the information received from the MD Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA).

As for getting a Maryland license, you are required to obtain this within 60 days of becoming a MD resident. When you apply for this license, MD will likely check your old license and make certain there are no suspensions or outstanding citations. Usually points do not transfer, but you will have to check with the MD MVA to find out for certain.
