Car Insurance Question  I live in Canada and a few months back got a $115 ticket for not wearing a seat belt. I was the driver. Will I lose points? Will this raise my insurance rates?

In many Canadian Providences and Territories, a citation for a driver failing to wear a seat belt is 2 demerit points. This is true for Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan to name a few.

In Canada, this offense goes on your record as either a moving or non-moving violation depending on the area of Canada in which you received the ticket. It is also recorded on your motor vehicle abstract which can then be viewed by your auto insurance company.

Depending on your insurance company they might see this as a minor violation and have no impact on your rates or can be seen as making you more of a risk while driving and raise your insurance rates. It likely will also depend on what other infractions you might have on your driving record. Contact your insurance company to find out if your premiums will change due to this conviction of the seat belt offense.

If your rates rise, you can shop around for other auto insurance. Start here by clicking here for an canadian auto insurance quote.
