Car Insurance Question  My parents are retired and live in a small town (with low rates), whereas I live in Chicago (with higher rates). They decided to sell their home and to travel around the U.S. for the next year. They wanted to use my address to receive mail while they are on the road, but discovered that their insurance rate would double. What should someone do that has no permanent residence? Is there insurance available for someone that is not in a fixed location?

There are many retired men and woman that chose to have not fixed address and travel in car or recreational vehicle (RV) around the U.S. and can run into the problem of not having a permanent address to list on insurance and other documents.

Insurance companies need an address of some sort to calculate the rates for the vehicle and driver. From our research most people without a fixed address decide to get a PO Box or use a mail forwarding service. Not all insurance companies will recognize a PO Box as a type of address though.

Mail forwarding services are available through many companies. If your parents are using an RV for their travels around the U.S., they might consider joining a RV club such as Good Sam Club. Their website, www.goodsamclub.com, notes that many members choose to establish residency in Florida (where the service is run) through their mail forwarding service.

This particular mail forwarding service includes a "real" street address so it can be used for documents. Some people that use a mail forwarding service choose a state that has no income tax and may even register to vote in that state. Other RV clubs offer similar services.

If your parents are not interested in getting a PO Box or mail forwarding service, they can check with the Illinois Division of Insurance to see what is recommended for a motorist without a fixed address in IL.
