How many points have to be on your driving record in Pennsylvania before they will take away your drivers license?

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) maintains a driving record for every licensed driver in PA and points are added to this record when a driver is found guilty of certain driving (moving) violations.

Upon the first accumulation of 6 points, a driver will receive a written notice to take special written point examination. The driver has 30 days to successfully pass the exam or else the license will be suspended until the exam is passed. If the exam is passed within the 30 days, 2 points will be removed from the driving record.

A second accumulation of 6 points by a driver will result in the motorist being required to attend a Departmental Hearing. At the hearing the Department may order: a 15 day license suspension or the driver to take a special on-road exam or both or take not action at all. Failure to appear to the hearing will result in a 60 day license suspension.

A third accumulation of 6 points will result in another hearing. PennDOT will determine if a 30 day suspension will be initiated. If the driver fails to attend the hearing, their license will be suspended until the driver does show up for a hearing.

If any driving record reaches 11 or more points, the driver's license will automatically be suspended. The length of the suspension depends on how many times the license was suspended in the past. The first suspension is 5 days per point, the second is 10 days per point a third suspension is 15 days per point. Any subsequent suspensions will be for a one year period.

If the driver is under the age of 18 the rules are different. PennDOT will suspend the license when the driver accumulate only 6 points or are convicted of driving 26 or more mph over the posted speed limit.
