Car Insurance Question  When applying for insurance do convictions in NJ for 39:4-97.2, Operating a motor vehicle in an unsafe manner, which is a zero point, zero insurance point violation that is usually the result of a plea bargain, have to be disclosed? If so, how is it characterized since there is generally nothing like this in the violation list?

It is always best when applying for or renewing an insurance policy to disclose all violations for the time period in which the insurance company is requesting information on. Leaving any information out could be considered misleading and make your quote change once this information is found out.

On the NJ violation page you have these options to choose from:

  • Speeding < 15 MPH
  • Speeding > 15 and < 30 MPH
  • Ignoring a traffic signal or sign
  • Making an Illegal turn
  • Other minor traffic violation
  • DUI/DWI
  • License previously suspended or revoked
  • License currently suspended or revoked
  • Reckless driving
  • Passing illegally
  • Unsafe operation
  • Other major traffic violation
  • Other license, registration or license plates violation

For operating a motor vehicle in an unsafe manner citation you can typically disclose this as an Unsafe Operation violation. Or if your violation does not meet that criterion you can choose the "other violation" option.
