The State of Washington does not have a point system and thus does not assign points for moving violations. If a Washington licensed driver receives 4 moving violations in one year or 5 moving violations in two years though the WA driver's license will be suspended for 30 days unless the driver attends a driver awareness group meeting. A person found to have committed a traffic infraction shall be assessed a monetary penalty that is prescribed by the Washington supreme court. The supreme court adjusts this schedule of fines and penalties about every two years for inflation. No penalty for traffic infractions shall exceed $250 according to the current monetary schedule. A conviction of a second degree negligent driving citation has been assigned the top fine of $250. Since you want to fight the citation in court you will need to contact the entity listed on the back of the ticket and ask how to do so. You might be able to reduce the charge or take traffic school to dismiss the charge. The Washington Department of Insurance states that insurance companies can charge a surcharge to drivers convicted of serious traffic violations so if the traffic infraction ends up making it onto your driving record than your insurance rates could be affected, depending on your insurance company's rating system.
