What is the first thing I need to do after they hand me my first speeding ticket? The court date is in 2 months.

After receiving a speeding ticket you will need to follow the instructions on the citation, which might include contacting the traffic court. By contacting the court clerk you should be able to find out what your options are regarding the ticket. Typically a driver determines if they want to pay the ticket and admit guilt or contest the ticket and not admit guilt.

If you don't admit guilt and the courts agree with that assessment, then your insurance won't be affected. If the court instead agrees that the officer giving you the ticket was in the right, you will have to pay court fees, the fine and have the violation put on your record which could affect your insurance premium.

One ticket can raise your insurance rates. Read our articles What a Traffic Ticket can Truly Cost You and What To Do After Receiving A Traffic Ticket for more information on dealing with traffic citations.
