Car Insurance Question  My husband and I reside in PA but have a house in Florida. We live in PA 6 months out of the year and FL the other 6 months. To obtain FL homeowners insurance, we had to register one of our cars in FL. Now I have a Florida drivers license and one of our cars licensed in Florida and my husband has a PA license and our other car registered in PA. The cars are insured by different carriers. Our PA insurance carrier states that I could run into problems since we are licensed in 2 different states and have cars insured in 2 different states. Is this true? Also, can our PA auto insurance company cancel us if I have a FL license and my husband maintains his PA license? Can they deny a claim too?

As an insured you are in a grey area so yes, it is possible that you could run into problems with most insurance companies. Most insurance carriers require that you live in your resident state 10 months out of the year or they will not insure you without that endorsement.

Your insurance provider in Pennsylvania may not allow you to be listed and pay claims on you for that policy since you do not legally live in PA (by law). Your carrier in Florida may not allow your husband to be listed and/or pay the claims on him since he does not reside in FL.

You will have to explain your situation to your insurance company and see if you qualify for their coverage. If you do, then you should get it in writing that you would be covered on either policy in your situation.

Furthermore, the liability requirements are different in each state. This opens a potential claim to both carriers. For example, if you have a claim on one vehicle in one state that has lower liability limits than the other state then there can be some potential uncovered liability limits toward the carrier.

For more information on the insurance law for Pennsylvania and Florida contact each state's insurance regulator.
