If you have moved from Texas to California and become a CA resident, you will need to get a CA license and register your vehicle in California. According to the CA DMV, if you still consider yourself a resident of another state (Texas) you may operate your vehicle with its current registration for up to 6 months in California or until you: - Accept gainful employment in California or become a CA resident.
- Claim a homeowner's exemption in California.
- Rent or lease a residence in California.
- Enroll in an institution of higher learning as a California resident or enroll any dependents in school (K-12).
- Intend to live or be located in California on a permanent basis (e.g. acquire a CA driver license, register to vote, etc.).
So if you are working and living in California you will need to register your vehicle there, especially since you already have CA insurance on it. Registration fees must be paid within 20 days of entry into CA or residency to avoid penalties. Typically one should register and insure a vehicle in the state that they reside at least 10 months of the year in. If you have moved to and now reside in California than the vehicle should be registered in that state it would appear according to CA statutes.
