Car Insurance Question  I live in New Jersey and pay very high insurance rates due to an accident and careless driving ticket. I would like to find out where I can see the amount of insurance points I have on my record and when they are going to be removed.

Insurance companies in New Jersey can assign insurance eligibility points for driver inexperience, motor vehicle violations, suspensions and at-fault accidents. Insurance points for a violation or accident are dropped when the incident falls outside the 3 year "look back" period.

The schedule of authorized insurance eligibility point is published in the New Jersey Administrative Code (NJAC) 11:3-34. According to the list each at-fault accident is worth 5 points and careless driving is 2 points.

For the most part insurance points match up with motor vehicle violation points. Items that I believe are not listed on the NJSA point scale are: at-fault accident of 5 points, failure to verify insurance involved in an automobile accident of 2 points, 3 points for each full year of a court imposed driver's license suspension and 4 points for being involved in a fatal accident.

To get a copy of your driver's record and motor vehicle points you can contact the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission by mail, online or going to a driver conferencing center and paying $10. As for insurance points you can ask your insurance company for a listing of what points they have listed for you.
