Car Insurance Question  I just received a speeding ticket in New Jersey. Will I have any points put on my license and how does it affect my insurance?

According to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission listing of the NJSA point scale, speeding can get you 2, 4 or 5 points on your license. For exceeding the maximum speed by 1 - 14 miles it is 2 points, for exceeding the limit by 15 - 29 mph it is 4 points and it is 5 points for exceeding the posted limit by 30 mph or more.

Your insurance rates could be affected depending on your insurance company's rating system. NJ insurance companies can assign insurance points for moving violations. For speeding it should be the same amount of insurance points as motor vehicle points.

The NJ Department of Banking and Insurance (DOBI) have allowed insurance company to set up rating tiers. The tier under which you fall and thus are rated on will depend on such factors as your driving record and driving experience as well as a variety of other risk factors.

To find out more about how your insurance companies rating system or tiers work, contact your agent or the DOBI which they must file their rates with.
