Car Insurance Question  I just got a speeding ticket in Maine. I am from Canada. Will it show up on my Canadian driving record?

Certain territories and Providences in Canada have reciprocal agreements with various states within the United States. So it will depend upon if the area of Canada in which you are licensed has any type of agreement with the state of Maine concerning the reporting of traffic offenses.

For example, there is a reciprocal agreement between the government of Quebec and the State of Maine concerning driver's licenses and traffic offenses. Article 3 of this Regulation includes information regarding the reports and effects of convictions of traffic offenses.

The agreement states that declarations of guilt concerning the following offenses shall be reported to the jurisdiction of origin of the license holder by the jurisdiction in which the offense was committed:

  • Offenses relating to the failure of a driver involved in an accident to do his or her duty under Maine statutes or the Quebec Highway Safety Code.
  • Offenses relating to driving over a posted speed limit or at a speed in excess of that which is reasonable or prudent.
  • Offenses relating to the failure to obey a red light or stop sign.
  • Offenses relating to the failure to stop at the approach of a school bus with its flashing lights in operation.

The reciprocal agreement goes on to say that for purposes of driver licensing records, the home jurisdiction shall recognize a declaration of guilt of one of its residents in the other party jurisdiction as if the offense had been committed in the home jurisdiction. Demerit points shall be assessed and suspensions or revocations issued in accordance with the laws of the home jurisdiction.

If you do not live in Quebec see if your ministry of transportation or similar agency within your providence of Canada has an agreement with Maine such as this one.
