Car Insurance Question  I am moving from Canada to North Carolina and want to transfer my car with me to NC. I have to get a car insurance. Is it possible to apply for a new NC driver's license without liability insurance?

To apply for vehicle title and registration in North Carolina, and thus transfer your car from Canada, you will need to obtain a North Carolina Driver's License.

According to the NCDOT Division of Motor Vehicles, to obtain a driver's license you need to show proof of residency, proof of age and identity, proof of liability insurance and proof of social security number. If you are not eligible for a social security number you can show the DMV an individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN).

Insurance requirements within North Carolina mandate that you provide proof of insurance by either providing insurance company name and policy number or a certificate of insurance obtained from an insurance company licensed to do business in NC.

The minimum requirements of liability insurance for a private passenger vehicle are 30/60/25. These numbers stand for $30,000 for bodily injury for 1 person, $60,000 bodily injury for 2 or more people in one accident and $25,000 for property damage occurring in one accident.

You can check with the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicle's licensing department but it would appear that you will need NC liability insurance to acquire a state driver's license.

While it can be hard to obtain insurance with a foreign license, if you are going to obtain a license from a state within 30 days it should be possible. Get started with a North Carolina free car insurance quote here with us.
