Car Insurance Question  What are insurance rates like in New Haven, CT in comparison to insurance rates in Los Angeles, CA? My insurance rate just went up $550 for a moving violation point on my record. I am moving in a couple months to New Haven and am wondering if it's going to affect my rates there.

There are differences between the mandatory state insurance requirements in Connecticut and California. In California you are required to have bodily injury of $15,000/$30,000 and property damage of $5000.

Connecticut state law requires liability limits of $20,000/$40,000 for bodily injury and $10,000 for property damage. The state also requires a minimum of $20,000/$40,000 of uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

Since Connecticut has higher and more insurance requirements than California their state average for auto insurance is higher. I was unable to find city averages but in 2005 the state average for CT was $981 while the state average in CA was $821.

Your moving violation in California might affect your insurance rates in Connecticut since insurance companies that you apply for insurance with will check your driving record as part of their rating criteria.
