I just received a speeding ticket in North Carolina while driving back to my home state of Tennessee. I was wondering if I will receive points and if it would affect my insurance rate? And is there any way to not receive points?

Tennessee is not part of the Drivers License Compact anymore but has agreement with other states so that they report tickets back to other states and other states will report moving violation citations of TN drivers back to Tennessee.

Speeding violations in Tennessee are typically worth 1 to 8 points depending upon how many mph in excess of the posted speed you were going. Since the North Carolina speeding ticket will likely be reported to TN, the Tennessee Department of Safety might apply points to your license as if the offense occurred in state. Find out by for certain by calling them at 615-251-5166.

If points are going to be assessed you may ask the Department of Safety or the NC DOT if there is a way to not get the ticket put on your record or assigned points. If the ticket does make it onto your TN driving record, your insurance rates could be affected. It will depend upon the rating system of your insurance company.

If the North Carolina ticket affects your insurance premiums, shop around for car insurance rates starting here with an affordable quote.
