We were unable to find that Minnesota has a points system for moving violations. The Minnesota Driver's Manual states that you can be fined for driving a vehicle faster than the posted speed limit. Fines will double if you speed in marked construction zones. The MN Driver and Vehicle Services site says that driving in Minnesota is a privilege and you can lose this privilege if you break certain laws or fail to meet certain requirements. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety maintains your driving record, which contains information about driving and licensing violations in Minnesota and other states. It appears there is not a violations points system for Minnesota so it would not be points that could affect your insurance rates, but the moving violation itself that goes onto your MN driving record. A conviction of the speeding citation could raise your rates, depending upon your insurance company's rating system. To find out about your insurance company's rating system, ask your insurance agent or contact the Insurance Division of the MN Department of Commerce with whom insurance companies must file their rates with.
