Car Insurance Question  I am 19 and just got a ticket for going 11 miles over in Minnesota. This is my first speeding ticket will my insurance rates go up for certain? Is there anything I can do so that they do not go up?

In Minnesota, when you are convicted of a speeding citation you will be fined and the violation will go on your MN driving record. If you are charged with serious or recurring violations of the MN law, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety may take away your driving privileges or restrict where, when and what type of vehicle you can drive.

Since this was your first ticket, your insurance premiums may not change but if you have a safe driver discount it might be eliminated. Insurance companies differ on their rating practices but most consider the seriousness of your violation and determine rate changes accordingly. To find out what type of rating system your insurance provider uses, contact your current insurance agent.

You might see if taking a Driver Improvement Clinic or traffic school can help take the ticket off of your record or improve your insurance rates (if they rise). The MN DPS office should be able to advise you on this matter.
