Car Insurance Question  If you get over 6 points on your license in Pennsylvania, what will happen?

In Pennsylvania, on your first accumulation of 6 or more points the driver will receive a written notice to take a special written point examination. This exam addresses your knowledge of safe driving practices, departmental sanctions and related safety issues. The driver has 30 days to pass the exam or else the license will be suspended until the exam is passed. If the exam is successfully passed within 30 days, 2 points will be removed from the driver's record.

If you have accumulated 6 points for a second time, the driver will have to attend a departmental hearing. At the hearing the examiner will review the person's driving record and may recommend a 15 day license suspension or the driver to take an on-road test or both actions or no action at all.

A person's driving record will have 2 points removed if the driver passes the on-road test within 30 days (if ordered to take it) or after their suspension has been served (if ordered to have that penalty). No points are removed if there were no sanctions given. Failure to appear at the hearing results in a 60 day license suspension.

A third accumulation of 6 points has the driver attending another departmental hearing and a 30 day license suspension will likely be initiated. Failure to attend this hearing will result in the suspension of the driver's license until the driver does attend a hearing.

Drivers under the age of 18 have harsher penalties. Their license will be suspended if they accumulate 6 or more points or are convicted of driving in excess of 26 mph. The first suspension is for 90 days and additional occurrences are 120 days. This is in addition to the points penalties listed above.
