In the UK, a No Claims Bonus (NCB) is a reward or discount given to drivers who have not made a claim on their motor insurance. As each annual policy period passes without a claim against the auto insurance, a no claims bonus can be built up. Each year that the driver does not make a claim, the driver is rewarded with another no claims bonus, which can add up to a substantial savings.
Most insurance companies recognize a maximum of 5 years of no claims and allow a larger savings at that time. Due to the fact that it takes 5 years to accumulate the maximum No Claims Bonus, many insurance companies will allow policyholder to pay an extra premium that will allow them to protect their no claims bonus. This means that one claim would be covered by this extra premium and thus not take away the NCB.
It would appear that since there was a claim made against your motor vehicle insurance policy, to pay the owner of the parked car, that your no claims bonus will likely be affected. This is unless you had the "protected discount" on your no claims discount. If you had this protection, then depending on the terms of this premium policy, your NCB may not be affected even after this claim from the trailer accident.
If you did not have this protection, your NCB discount could be affected. In general the NCB is reduced by 2 steps after a claim. With some companies if you have a lower discount, (i.e. only 1 year into the scheme with only a 35% discount) then this one claim may not be affected.
If you have a higher no claims discount, 55% or more, than 1 claim might be lower your bonus back down to 35%, the 2 steps back mentioned above. Insurance company's policy terms and guidelines do differ, so check with your specific motor insurance provider to find out for certain if this trailer accident will affect your No Claims Bonus.
