I live in Rhode Island and received a speeding ticket in Massachusetts. I do not wish to take the time to request a hearing so if I just pay this ticket in MA will it have any affect on my insurance in RI? Will it go on my record in RI? The ticket was while operating a motorcycle, if it does affect the insurance rate will it only affect my motorcycle insurance?

Massachusetts is not a part of the Drivers License Compact which Rhode Island is a part of and requires states to exchange information regarding tickets. Massachusetts though has decided to share violation convictions with other states so Rhode Island is likely included in this arraignment and will be notified of the speeding ticket.

Rhode Island state statutes say that the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is authorized to take action against the license of a RI resident if they receive notice of an offense in another state. For example if RI is notified of an offense in another state that would cause your license to be suspended, if the violation had occurred in Rhode Island, than the RI DMV would suspend your driver's license.

The statute does not make it clear if Rhode Island will put all out of state citations on your RI driving record or assess points, so you should check with the RI Division of Motor vehicles to find out for certain what they do after being notified of an out of state speeding ticket.

If the Massachusetts speeding ticket, you received on your motorcycle, is placed on your driving record, than you insurance company would see it. Even though this was on a motorcycle, a driving record typically records moving violations for both car and bike so the insurance company could see the offense and rate on it, if that is their policy.

Check with your insurance company about how they rate for speeding tickets. If it is your first moving violation, it might not affect your rates. But your insurance company will have to tell you their specific way of rating for moving violations. If our insurance rates rise, do some car insurance comparison shopping.
