Colorado and California are both members of the Drivers License Compact so if you are convicted of this traffic ticket in Colorado, the California DMV will be notified. According to California's violation point list out of state violations are worth 1 or 2 points on your California license or driving history.
Both Colorado and California do have traffic school systems. Normally if you contact the clerk of the court and/or the department of motor vehicles where you received your ticket, they can determine if you are eligible to take a driving course.
Typically states have laws regarding what type of moving violation driving school can be used for to dismiss or adjudicate the citation conviction. To use a defensive driving, or other type of driver improvement class for your offense, you will first have to see if Colorado allows a class to be taken for it. Next find out if you can take a class with an out of state license. Some states only allow traffic schools for in state drivers.
If taking a traffic class in Colorado is not an option, next you could check with the California DMV to see if it is possible to take a California driving class to keep the out of state violation off of your record.
