Minnesota requires owners of registered motor vehicles to maintain insurance on both automobiles and motorcycles. Violation of the insurance law can result in fines, imprisonment and loss of driving privileges.
According to the MN Driver's Manual, liability insurance for motorcycle drivers in Minnesota must include coverage for property damage and injury to other people with your vehicle. No-fault and uninsured driver insurance coverage is optional. Insurance protection is also available for damage, loss, or theft of the motorcycle.
The driver's manual states that failure to provide proof of insurance at the request of a law enforcement officer may lead to revocation of your driver's license and vehicle registration. Also anyone who is convicted of operating an uninsured vehicle may be fined up to $1,000 and sentenced to up to 90 days in jail.
If your boyfriend was cited for not having insurance on his motorcycle he will need to contact the court or entity listed on the ticket to find out what his fine and other penalties will be.
As for the damages, it will depend if your boyfriend is determined at fault or not. If he is found to be at-fault for the accident, he may be required to reimburse the other party for their damages. He can check with the MN DPS or insurance regulator at the Minnesota Department of Commerce to find out what is required of him.
