I received a ticket in New Jersey but have a Delaware license for doing 80 in a 65 zone. Will I end up with points on my DE license? Will this impact my insurance rates?

Your home state of Delaware and the state of New Jersey both take part in the Drivers License Compact (DLC). The DLC allows the member states to exchange information regarding traffic violations. So Delaware will be notified of this speeding citation.

If Delaware follows the basic guidelines of the DLC than the DE Division of Motor Vehicles will place this out of state speeding violation on your driving record. Points may also be assigned by the DMV, you will need to contact them to find out if this is done or not. If points are assessed it will likely be the same as if the offense had occurred in state.

In Delaware 1 to 9 mph over the posted limit is 2 points, 10 to 14 mph over is 4 points, 15 to 19 mph over is 5 points and 20 or more mph over the speed limit is 5 points plus may result in additional actions including suspension.

The points on your license do not typically affect your rates; it is the violation listed that will. Insurance companies in Delaware have their own rating systems so you will need to find out from your insurance agent if this one traffic violation will affect your rates. If it does, see if taking the a DE Insurance Commissioner approved defense driving course can still earn you a discount.

The Insurance Commissioner site states that taking a defensive driving course can earn you a 10 percent discount of your auto insurance premium for 3 years and if you take a refresher course towards the end of the 3 year period your discount can be boosted to 15 percent.

Recently IC has begun to approve online classes as well as classroom courses. You can find a list of all classes on the DE Insurance Commissioner site and list of online classes at delawaredriver.com.
