I live in Florida and my car was stolen. I was wondering how long it takes to settle a claim from the time it was stolen, if it is not found. My insurance company won't tell me how long before it is going to be settled.

The Florida Department of Financial Services (FLFS) website states that at the present time, there is no Florida Statute or Department Rule which addresses a time limit for auto insurance claims to be settled.

The state of Florida and insurance regulator count on the insurance company to settle claims promptly once the accident or theft of a vehicle has been investigated and the way in which to settle the claim has become reasonably clear.

If your stolen vehicle is not recovered than you should expect your insurance company to offer you a settlement, under the comprehensive portion of your policy, in a reasonable amount of time.

If a significant amount of time has gone by and the insurance company will not tell you how much longer it will take to process the claim, you can contact the FLFS's consumer division, but we recommend trying to get a hold of the insurance company first.
