Car Insurance Question  I was told that it is a Oregon State law that insurance companies can only go 3 years back on your driving record is this true?

The Department of Motor Vehicles for Oregon maintains motorists driving records. A person's driving history includes convictions for traffic violations and crimes, suspensions, revocations and cancellations of your driving privileges.

The Oregon consumer guide to auto insurance, put out by OR Department of Transportation, states that under Oregon law an insurance company can use only the last three years of your driving record when deciding whether to issue or renew a policy or determining your premium.

If it has been more than 3 years since your last moving violator or accident, you may qualify for your auto insurance rates to be lowered. To find out what exact Oregon law or statute is regarding your motor vehicle record being looked back at by insurance companies, try contacting the Insurance Division of the Oregon Consumer and Business Services.

Comment Update: If an out of state driver gets a quote in Oregon or a recently re-located driver then the company has the ability to pull out of state license information which may or may not go back 5 years.

car insurance commentsThe answer was clear and I understand the law now, however, every insurance company I have seen on the web thus far has asked for a 5 year record instead of 3 years. If its Oregon law (3 years) why are they all asking for a 5 year record?
