Car Insurance Question  I received a ticket in Connecticut for not stopping at a stop sign. I have a Rhode Island license, how will that affect my record? Will my license be suspended?

Both Connecticut and Rhode Island are part of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) so the CT courts and/or DMV will notify the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) about the failing to obey a stop sign citation.

According to Rhode Island statutes the DMV is authorized to take action against the license of a RI resident if they are informed of an offense committed in another state. Likely this means that the out of state violation will be placed on your RI driving record but you should check with the RI DMV to find out for certain. The DMV should also be able to inform you if points will be assigned for the CT ticket.

It would seem unlikely that a failure to obey a stop sign violation from out of state would get your Rhode Island license suspended unless that offense in RI would get your driving privileges suspended. If you failed to pay or otherwise take care of the Connecticut stop sign violation though your RI license may be suspended.

Rhode Island and Connecticut are members of a second Compact called the Non-Resident Violator. Members of this Compact agree to suspend the drivers license of those who get traffic tickets for moving violations in other states but fail to take care of them.
