Car Insurance Question  I have a Michigan license but got a speeding ticket in Ontario, Canada. As per Ontario, that speeding will be 4 points (149 kmph in 100kmph zone). How much will it be in the MI system and will it affect my insurance? This is my first ticket.

According to the information we were able to gather, all provinces in Canada have a reciprocal agreement with Ontario regarding moving violations. Ontario also has agreement with 41 states, including Michigan. See the bottom of this answer for a list of all the states Ontario supposedly has some type of reciprocal agreement with.

According to the Michigan Driver Services division of the Department of State, if you get a ticket in another state it will likely eventually appear on your Michigan driving record and points will be assessed as required by the Michigan Vehicle Code. So it would also be likely that the Ontario ticket would also show up on your MI motor vehicle record.

The points system in Michigan assigns you 2 points for a speeding ticket 10 mph or less over the limit, 3 points for 11 to 15 mph over and 4 points for 16 mph or more over the posted limit. If points are assigned for this out of state ticket, than it should be for the amount that matches with your over the limit citation in Canada.

If the Ontario, Canada speeding violation is placed on your Michigan driving record, than your insurance company could see if the next time they pull your MVR and thus your rates may be affected. If your premiums do go up, you can shop here for an affordable Michigan car insurance rate.

The following states in the U.S. have a reciprocal agreement with Ontario: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
