Car Insurance Question  I am a NJ CDL licensed driver. I received a ticket for going through a stop sign in Maryland. How many points is this and will it be sent to NJ DMV?

New Jersey and Maryland are both members of the Drivers License Compact so your home state of New Jersey will be informed by the MD MVA of the ticket you received in MD for failing to stop at a stop sign. In New Jersey the offense of failure to observe stop or yield a sign is a 2 point offense.

As part of their information regarding their membership in the Driver's License Compact, the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission notes that only 2 points are assessed for out of state moving violations. The violation will also become part of your New Jersey driving record.

This is for when you have a regular NJ driver's license, the rules may be different because of you holding a commercial license so check with the MVC to find out for certain how many points you will be assessed. Because you are a CDL holder you also have more federal and state rules to follow when you receive a conviction for a traffic violation. This includes:

• You must notify your employer within 30 days of a conviction for any traffic violation (except parking) regardless of what type of motor vehicle you were driving when the violation occurred.

• You must notify New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission within 30 days if you are convicted in any other state of any traffic violation (except parking) regardless of what type of motor vehicle you were driving when the violation occurred.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) notes that Safety Acts concerning CDL holders make it so States must be connected to the Commercial Driver's License Information System (CDLIS) and the National Driver Register (NDR) in order to exchange information about CMV drivers, traffic convictions, and disqualifications. Penalties will be applied if you do not notify your state's Department of Motor vehicles of traffic violations as required by federal or state laws.
