I have SR 22 car insurance. I bought a motorcycle, it got stolen the first week before I could put it on my policy. Will my SR-22 ins. cover my bike if it is registered in my name?

An SR-22 is not a type of insurance, but rather proof that you have certain types of insurance (based upon the financial responsibility laws of your state), typically for liability insurance. For a stolen vehicle to be covered you would need to have more than just liability insurance, you would need comprehensive coverage on it. It would not appear that you have that coverage if you only have what is required for an SR-22.

If you did have an automobile comprehensive coverage it would still be doubtful that the bike would be covered since the motorcycle was not listed on the policy and thus you were not paying for that specific vehicle to be covered.

Furthermore, normally coverage from an automobile policy is not extended to include a motorcycle. Insurance companies' guidelines and state laws can differ though so you can speak to your insurance company to see what is covered under your current car insurance and if any coverages would extend to the motorcycle.

For motorcycle insurance coverage you can click here or call our partner Safeco at 1-800-936-0356.
