Car Insurance Question  Is there a rate difference between 4x2 and 4x4 vehicles?

Yes, there is a rate difference between 4x2 vehicles and 4x4 vehicles. A vehicle type affects the classification which an automobile falls into.

There is a slight rate difference typically between a 4x2 and a 4x4 in most rating systems. Each insurance company uses a number of different classifications. Here is a quick comparison against 3 of our insurance companies' six month premiums, with all factors being the same except selecting the four by two version of a vehicle and a four by four version of a vehicle:

4x2 six month premiums

  • Company A:$666
  • Company B:$399
  • Company C:$628

4x4 six month premiums

  • Company A:$697
  • Company B:$405
  • Company C:$622

As you can see from this example, depending on the insurance company: it can be higher or lower and it can impact the rate more or less.
