In Florida the state minimum required car insurance for a motor vehicle is $10,000 of PIP and $10,000 of Property Damage Liability. This basic coverage is often referred to as a PIP/PD.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage helps pay for "reasonable and necessary" medical expenses for you and your passengers. Property Damage Liability pays for damage (up to the limit of the policy) that you or anyone covered under your policy cause to another person’s property through the use of a covered automobile. It only covers damage for which you or anyone insured under your policy are legally liable for. In your husband's situation, his property damage liability insurance should cover the damages the other party's vehicle sustained, up to the limits of the policy. If the damages are over the limit of the policy than likely he will be held personally responsible for that amount.
State law does not require a minimum coverage for Bodily Injury Liability coverage but you may be required to get this coverage once you have been in an accident and you can't prove sufficient financial responsibility.
For you or your husband to find out more about the claims process and the coverage he has, contact your insurance company and go over the terms of the car insurance policy.
