Car Insurance Question  Is it possible to get a discount if I am a full time student dependent upon my GPA? If so, what GPA is needed to qualify for the discount?

Some insurance companies may offer a good student discount or similar discount based upon your grade point average (GPA). The qualifications and minimum GPA may differ depending upon each individual insurance company's underwriting rules and general guidelines.

This discount normally applies to Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability, medical payments, and comprehensive and collision coverages providing that each such youthful driver meets certain requirements.

Most insurance companies require have full-time enrollment in school (high school, college or university) and a 3.00 or “B” average for the discount to be applied. Many insurance companies will provide you with a form you can submit to the school for them to verify your grades.

This verification form will specify the requirements for that company’s good student discount. If there is not form then you will likely need to request a copy of your last semester’s grades and grade point average to show to the insurance company.

Some insurance companies may have an alternative requirement that you are in the top 20% of your class. In most cases students in the top 20% of their class have grade point averages of 3.20 or higher, so this alternate provision is generally more stringent than the B average or 3.0 GPA.

There is also the age limit. Typically you need to be a full-time student that meets the grade requirements and be under age 25. For some insurance companies their age limit in certain states for the good student discount is 21 and some also require you to be unmarried.

Since qualifications for a good student discount can differ with each insurance company contact your insurance company to find out their requirements. If you want to get a quote for affordable auto insurance on your vehicle including the GPA or good student discount, start here with us.
