We were unable to obtain information on exactly how long points or violations stay on a person's Georgia driving record. We did find out though that you can get a copy of your 3 or 7 year driving record (MVR) through the GA Department of Driver Services (DDS) MVR Unit.
The consumer helpline of the GA DDS may be able to answer your question regarding the length of time various traffic violations stay on your driver's history. Their phone number is 1-866-754-3687.
According to the DDS you can take a point reduction defensive driving course once every 5 years. You cannot take the traffic school class over the Internet or on a computer. The DDS only allows classroom instruction for this driving school.
You may not take the traffic school for insurance reduction and point reduction or for more than one violation according to the DDS information sheet on the defensive driving course. It also appears that the points are reduced but that the violation remains on your record. If this is the case, you insurance company can indeed see the violations and thus rate you on them.
It will depend upon your insurance carrier's rating system how these traffic violations will affect your premiums. If your rates increase, it may be time to shop around for a new insurance provider. You can start here with us and get an affordable auto insurance quote for Atlanta or other cities within the state of Georgia.
