Car Insurance Question  I just got a disobeyed traffic control device ticket in MI. Will I receive any points and how many? And if so, how much will this affect my insurance?

In Michigan each time you are convicted of a traffic violation you are required to pay court costs and fine. In addition, points may be posted to your driver record. Points are set by the Michigan Vehicle Code. Points placed on a person's driving record remain there for 2 years from the date of conviction.

Disobeying a traffic signal or stop sign is a 3 point offense according to the points system listed in the MI driver's manual. As for insurance eligibility points, it would appear this offense would fall under the "other moving violation" arena and be 2 insurance points.

Once this moving violation is placed on your Michigan motor vehicle record, your insurance company will see it next time they pull your MVR. At that time it will depend upon your insurance provider's rating system how much this citation will affect your rates.

You can find out about your insurance company's rating system either from contacting your insurance agent and asking for information on it or by contacting the Michigan Insurance Regulator with whom insurance companies must file their rates with.
