Car Insurance Question  Does Florida have a reciprocal agreement regarding traffic violations with Ontario, Canada? I recently received a speeding ticket in Florida with my own car with Ontario plates and I reside in Ontario.

Ontario has reciprocal agreements regarding various issues, such as traffic violations, with all other Canadian provinces and 41 States within the United States. I did not see Florida listed here but from other information gathered it appears that Ontario and Florida do have other reciprocal agreements with each other for things such as handicap parking, etc.

On the Ontario's Ministry of Transportation site it notes that drivers convicted of a driving related offence in the State of New York, the State of Michigan or any Canadian province or territory, will have home jurisdictional penalties such as demerit points and/or suspensions applied to their Ontario driver record as if the offence occurred in Ontario. Again Florida is not listed.

Since agreements may be signed and put into place at any time I would check with the Ministry of Transportation to find out for certain if the Florida speeding ticket will be placed on your Canadian driving record and/or if you will receive demerit points for this out of province citation.

The MTO states that inquiries regarding driver's record and demerit points should be directed to their Licensing Administration Office, 1-800-387-3445.

Below is a list of convictions for which demerit points and /or suspensions will be applied if the MTO has an agreement for the out-of-province offense to appear on your driving record as if it had occurred within the Ontario province:

 Traffic Violations -

  • Speeding
  • Fail to obey stop sign
  • Fail to obey signal light
  • Fail to stop for school bus
  • Racing
  • Fail to remain or return to the scene of a collision
  • Careless driving

Criminal -

  • Motor manslaughter
  • Criminal negligence
  • Dangerous driving
  • Failure to remain at scene of a collision
  • Impaired Driving
  • Driving while disqualified or prohibited
