Car Insurance Question  I live in Oklahoma and bought a new car and I had not had time to get insurance put on it. However, I do have insurance on my other car and have the verification card in the glove box for it. I was pulled over from the cops the other day, and was asked to show insurance proof. I gave them that card and they said it would not work, and that I needed to show proof on that car. Well, I ended up getting a ticket for $249 because of it. Don't I have 14 days to get insurance on the new car? I thought as long as I had insurance on at least one vehicle it was okay.

Oklahoma Motor Vehicle section 7-606 is the state law for failure to maintain security on a motor vehicle. Here it states that an owner or operator who fails to comply with the Compulsory Insurance Law of OK shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction shall be subject to a fine of not more than Two Hundred Fifty Dollars ($250.00), or imprisonment for not more than thirty (30) days, or by both such fine and imprisonment, and in addition thereto, shall be subject to suspension of license and registration

Oklahoma state law requires minimum Bodily Injury Liability coverage of $10,000 per injured person up to a total of $20,000 per accident, and Property Damage Liability coverage with a minimum limit of $10,000. This basic coverage is often referred to as 10/20/10 coverage.

We know of no such grace period in Oklahoma for obtaining insurance on a new vehicle. Your insurance company may have covered your new vehicle if you were replacing one already on your policy, but it sounds as if you were adding a new car to the policy instead.

If you still believe that your insurance company was covering you under the policy of your other vehicle at the time you were cited, check with your insurance company to see if this is correct. If they say that you did have coverage, under a grace period they allow in which to add the vehicle, then get proof of this in writing and see if the Oklahoma court listed on your citation will allow it as proof of insurance.

For more information on OK insurance law and to find out for certain if there is a 14 day grace period in which to add a new vehicle to your auto insurance policy, contact the Oklahoma Insurance Department.
