Car Insurance Question  My father stays in NJ for six months and then goes back to Florida for the rest of the six months of the year. His permanent residence is Florida. He wants to buy a car in NJ and keep it here for when he comes here. However, we want to know if he can use his Florida drivers license to purchase car insurance in NJ.

Yes, it should be possible for your father to register and insure a vehicle in New Jersey with his Florida driver's license. There are many seasonal residents or "snowbirds" that live part of the year in Florida and the other part in a different part of the US or even out of the country.

Your father, since he is a resident of Florida probably already knows that for any vehicle he has in Florida for 90 days or more during the year that he is required to carry Florida auto insurance of personal injury protection (PIP) and property damage liability (PDL) auto insurance for on that vehicle.

If he leaves a car in Florida for the 6 months he spends in New Jersey he must continue to maintain FL insurance on the vehicle or surrender the vehicle's Florida tag and registration at the nearest driver license or tag office. If he chooses to do this, when he next returns to Florida he will have to register the vehicle after obtaining proof of FL insurance once again.

In New Jersey, state law requires that any vehicle registered in NJ be covered by auto insurance of at least the state minimum liability insurance limits of 15/30/5. This stands for Bodily Injury Liability coverage of $15,000 per injured person up to a total of $30,000 per accident, and Property Damage Liability coverage with a minimum limit of $5,000. New Jersey state law also requires a minimum of Personal Injury Protection coverage of $15,000.

For information on how to register a vehicle in New Jersey you father can contact the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission. Click here for an insurance quote for your father's vehicle which he plans to insure and leave in New Jersey.
