Car Insurance Question  There are 3 cars in the household and all are insured full-coverage. My brother recently left the country and won't be back until July 2007. Since he won't be driving his car and it will remained parked, we called our insurance company and reduced coverage on his car to liability only in order to save money. I wonder if i can just eliminate coverage completely on the car since no one is going to use it. Is this legal?

You will need to check your state's law to find out if you can totally eliminate coverage from your brother's vehicle. It will depend upon your state insurance and financial responsibility laws if your brother is allowed to take all insurance coverage off of his vehicle while he is out of the country.

In many states if you want to take insurance off of a vehicle completely then you will need to turn in the plates and registration so that the State Department of Motor Vehicles does not fine the owner or place other penalties on them for having their vehicle uninsured.

If you do decide to turn in the plates and registration on the vehicle, then you should also make sure it is legal to keep the the car parked in its current location. Normally an unregistered vehicle is not allowed to be parked in a public lot or on a public street or roadway. A driveway at a private home likely will be allowable but I would advise checking with the State to make certain.
