In South Carolina your license is suspended typically and not revoked for having what the SC Department of Motor Vehicles determines is too many points on your driving record. Your South Carolina driver's license can be suspended once you accumulate 12 points under the point system law. This also goes for violations committed out of the state.
The rules are different if you hold a beginner’s permit, conditional provisional or special restricted driver’s license. With these types of licenses, if you accumulate six or more points, your driving privileges will be suspended for six months for Excessive Points. If you are suspended for Excessive Points, completing the National Safety Defensive Driver Course, or its equivalent, will not reinstate the suspension. The points that resulted in the Excessive Points suspension can also be used in a Point System suspension.
If you are a violation-prone driver but improve your driving so that you get no more points, your record will eventually be cleared. Points one year old are cut in half, and after two years they will be wiped out completely. The violation, however, will remain on your record for three years from the date SCDMV received the ticket.
A provision in the law provides for reducing a driver’s points by four upon successful completion of an approved defensive driving course. Only one such reduction in a three year period is permitted under this provision.
Though a South Carolina license is not typically revoked for accumulating points, there are traffic offenses and other reasons which may cause the SCDMV to revoke your driver's license. These offenses include:
- You are found guilty of killing any person while driving a car careless manner.
- You are found guilty of any felony in which a motor vehicle used.
- You are involved in any accident in which someone is killed injured and you fail to stop and give assistance.
- You are convicted of driving a motor vehicle engaged in a race on a public street or highway.
- You furnish false information pertaining to financial responsibility on your motor vehicle registration.
- You become mentally or physically incompetent to drive.
