State laws differ regarding when a salvage title is required for a vehicle declared a total loss by an insurance company. It sounds as if you may reside in Illinois.
Illinois vehicle code allows a person to keep a totaled vehicle only if it is nine years old or older, or if the vehicle has incurred only hail damage that does not affect the operational safety of the vehicle. In that case, your insurance company may, but is not required to let you keep your vehicle. If you have a newer vehicle, you must give the vehicle and clear title to your insurance company before they can settle your claim.
As for selling your vehicle for a reasonable price, that will depend upon the condition of the vehicle and if the accident is listed on your car's history with say a company like CarFax. If your vehicle history report listed with a company such as this tells of the accident and total loss of the vehicle then likely the re-sell price of your vehicle will go down.
There are tools on sites such as Kelley Blue Book and Nada Guides that should help you determine how much your vehicle is worth if you are pricing it to sell.
