Car Insurance Question  I live in Connecticut and had my stepson insured on our policy while he was temporarily living with us for two years. He is now 18 and when he left for college, in New Hampshire, we dropped him from our policy. He does not own a car and he will likely spend the majority of his vacations with his mother in either her London or New York homes. Will my stepson be covered on our policy if he comes to our house now and then and wants to drive our car? In other words, will he be covered as an occasional driver, or will the insurance company have a problem with the fact that we took him off specifically, and now he drives occasionally?

Insurance company guidelines differ so to find out what your specific insurance company allows in a situation such as yours you will need to contact your insurance agent and explain the situation. Depending upon their underwriting rules they may want you to add your stepson back to the policy as a driver for his occasional visit or they may allow him to be covered under your current policy if he comes in to visit.

If his mother has your stepson covered under her policy in New York for his visits there then you should inform your insurance company to see if that fact will make a difference with regards to if they will require him on the policy or not.

Most insurance companies require that you include all household members on your policy, including any children away from home or at college that may operate your vehicle during the occasional trips home so do not be surprised if yours will want your stepson added to the policy again if there is the possibility of him driving your vehicles.
