The typical auto insurance company usually will want you to have a State driver's license within 30 days of starting up a car insurance policy you place on a vehicle. Since you are visiting and without a permanent address it is doubtful you could obtain this for your holiday/vacation to Alaska, Canada and the lower 48 states.
There are specialty insurance companies though that provides the type of insurance you need. You will need to look for an auto insurance company that offers a USA tourist auto insurance policy or a temporary US automobile insurance program. These policies will likely have an extra surcharge due to you having a foreign license.
In the research that we have done the following insurance companies appear to offer car insurance for touring the US if you are a non US national who has bought a car here in the United States. American International Group (AIG) and GMAC and even Progressive have been mentioned in some areas as companies that provide this type of car insurance.
It will probably depend on your personal information, vehicle type and in what state you are taking out the insurance if these or other insurance companies will offer the auto insurance that you and your friends need for the vehicle you plan to buy in Alaska.
