Car Insurance Question  Does someone have to have their license to be put on the insurance or can they only have their permit?

Typically an insurance company will want a person to have full driver's license or be able to obtain one shortly if they are trying to acquire their own motor vehicle insurance policy. Or if you have a learner's permit only then some insurance companies will require a fully licensed driver to be on the insurance policy with you.

If instead you want to be put on someone else's insurance policy, such as your parent's if you are a minor that has just received your learner's permit, then the policy holder should discuss putting you on their policy with their agent. Some insurance companies will place a person with a permit only onto the policy while other insurance companies’ guidelines allow them to wait till the teen is licensed before putting them on the parent's policy.
