My son turns 18 tomorrow. We are giving him a 1996 Honda Accord with 69,000 miles on it. We want to title it in his name. We want insurance to cover, if he is in an accident, the other persons car if it is his fault. We don't need to cover his car. Would we want to get Liability Only?

For a young driver you will want to purchase the most insurance you can afford. You will not need to purchase Physical Damage coverage if you don't want the car covered.

Depending on your state, you can elect these coverage options to protect him:

Liability Coverage (LIABILTY)

Bodily Injury Liability (BI)

Property Damage Liability (PD)

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UM or UIM)

In states where Uninsured Property Damage is not offered (24 states), companies usually just define UMBI as UM, without the added extension of BI because there is no other UM offered in that state.

Underinsured Motorist Property Damage (UIMPD)

Uninsured Property Damage (UMPD)

Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury (UIMBI)

Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury (UMBI)

Other Coverage

Personal Injury Protection Coverage (PIP)

First Party Benefits - Medical (FPB)

Medical Payments (MP)

You can learn more about these coveraages on our Auto insurance coverage and packaged coverage types page.
