Car Insurance Question  My son got a DUI in North Carolina and his attorney needed a DL123 for a provisional license. My son is on our insurance policy with SafeCo in California, and our agent says they don't use a form named that. Is it the same as a SR22 form to prove driver has liability insurance?

Both the SR22 and the DL123 are documents required to show proof of financial responsibility. These forms show that you are carrying the minimum insurance required by the state and are financially responsible incase you cause an accident.

The rules regarding these forms are specific to each state, filing a form in one state may not meet the requirements of another state. North Carolina requires a DL123 instead of a SR22, and most companies don't offer out-of-state SR22/DL123 filings. Even though the form and purpose is similar, you will need to make sure you meet the DL123 requirements with Safeco. Also you need to make sure the that they file the DL123 in North Carolina with the NC DMV.

You may be able to contact California's Department of Motor Vehicles, for information about the out of state DL123 and where to obtain one if you are unable to get it filed with Safeco.

car insurance commentsOn my own I was able to obtain a DL123 from my Ca. ins. co. but it was difficult because Ca. utilizes the SR22 for proof of financial responsibility with car insurance. The DL123 is virtually outdated in Ca. Fortunately my ins. co. was able to obtain one to complete and fax to my sons attorney in time for his court date.
