There are two main types of uninsured motorist insurance. One is UMPD, which stands for uninsured motorist property damage. This type of policy covers your auto when property damage is sustained by an insured and the negligent operator does not possess insurance.
The second type of uninsured motorist coverage is UMBI, which stands for uninsured motorist bodily injury. UMBI covers you, the insured members of your household and your passengers for bodily/personal injuries, damages or death caused by an at-fault uninsured or hit-and-run driver. If you are involved in an accident where the other driver is at fault but has no insurance, your policy will cover your medical expenses, up to the limit on your policy
It depends on the state and policy, but typically UMPD and/or UMBI do NOT include a rental car allowance but you should check with your insurance agent to see exactly what uninsured motorist policy covers and if a rental car is part of this coverage. Usually UMPD or UMBI is not intended to a cover rental car if you had RREIM (Rental Car Reimbursement) it would give you an allowance in which to rent a car while yours is being repaired. UMPD is used "last" because it is intended to offer property damage coverage if all other coverage options have been exhausted.
